Federal Republic of Central America

The Central American Confederation ( Confederación de Centro América ), and the United Provinces of Central America ( Provincias Unidas del Centro de América ), and later the Federal Republic of Central America ( Republica Federal de Centro America), was a confederation of Central American countries Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, which existed from 1823 to 1838.

Development

After the provinces of the General Captaincy Guatemala gained independence from Spain in 1821, she first joined to the new Empire of Mexico.

After the fall of the Mexican Emperor Agustín I ( bourgeois. Agustín de Iturbide, * 1783, † 1824; reg 1822-1823 ) separated the provinces of the General Captaincy Guatemala with the exception of the province of Chiapas of Mexico and proclaimed on 1 July 1823 Republic of the United Provinces of Central America, which was recognized on August 20, 1823 by Mexico.

However, the only loose confederation of states involved in the following years in internal power struggles and civil wars, so that the Federation 1838-1841 broke apart again. First left Nicaragua in 1838 (30 April 1838), Honduras (26 October 1838) and Costa Rica (14 November 1838) from, then 1839 and finally Guatemala El Salvador. In fact so ended the Federation on 13 or April 17, 1839 with the exit of the fourth of five republics - Guatemala. Under international law, ended the Federation until 1840 - from parts of southwestern Guatemala, a new union republic was after the exit of the first three republics were created in 1838: Los Altos. President

Succession

From the time of Confederation, survived obtain the successor states remaining colors red, white and blue in their national flags ( with the exception of Costa Rica, which has added an additional red stripe in the white stripe) and the use of Masonic symbols in its coat of arms. Also, the National Day on September 15 is the five successor states together until today.

As an inter-governmental body founded in 1991, today transformed into the Central American Integration System ( SICA ).
