Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company

The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a shipyard in the United States. It belonged to the U.S. Steel Group and was located in Kearny, New Jersey, just before the confluence of the Hackensack River in the Newark Bay.

The shipyard was founded in 1917, when U.S. Steel oceangoing vessels required for the transport of steel products. During the last months of World War I, some warships have been built for the U.S. Navy, then the yard was mainly focused on the construction of cargo ships. The shipyard became a major employer in the region. 1940 were employed 6000 workers.

In 1930 the shipyard started again with the construction of warships for the U.S. Navy. Until the closure of the shipyard in 1949 79 destroyers, three cruisers and numerous cargo and tankers were completed.

On the former shipyard area was an industrial area, today remember the shipbuilding even more Dockbecken and a crane.
