The USS Cooper ( DD -695 ) was a destroyer of the Allen M. Sumner - class of the United States Navy. She stood in 1944 for nine months in the service of the U.S. Navy before it sank off Leyte.

History

The USS Cooper was laid on August 30, 1943 at the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Kearny, New Jersey on Kiel. After the baptism by the widow of the namesake Elmer Glenn Cooper (1905-1938), the destroyer was launched on February 9, 1944 from the stack. He was tried on March 27, 1944 under the command of Commander JW Schmidt in the U.S. Navy in service.

The Cooper left Boston on July 23, 1944, crossed the Panama Canal and arrived at Pearl Harbor on September 4 a. After extensive maneuvers and exercises off Hawaii, the destroyer was launched on 23 October in the direction of Ulithi, where he arrived on November 5th. He was assigned to escort the aircraft carrier for attacks on Luzon and the Manila Bay, to the 19th November, Cooper remained in that post. After brief repairs at Ulithi Atoll, she participated in patrols in the Gulf of Leyte.

On 2 December, the Cooper ran along with the USS Allen M. Sumner and the USS Moale in the Ormoc Bay to attack Japanese ships. The destroyer arrived at some small patrol vehicles and two small destroyers and attacked them. To 00:13 clock the Cooper received a torpedo hit on the starboard side, probably from the Kuwa. The explosion left the ship to break in two and sink within a minute. The presence of Japanese units prevented the rescue of the survivors, only against 14 clock PBY -5A Black Cats were 168 save survivors from the water. 191 crew members died in the sinking of the Cooper.
