Federico de Roncali, 1st Count of Alcoy

Federico Roncali y Ceruti, Count ( Conde ) of Alcoy ( born May 31, 1806 Cadiz, † April 4, 1857 in Madrid) was a Spanish lieutenant general, politician and President of the Government of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ).

Life

Military career and governor of Cuba

After school he graduated from military training. His promotion to brigadier general ( brigadier ) by his patron General Baldomero Espartero led to a serious political crisis. As a member of the Military Council ( Consejo de Guerra ), he proposed to the regent Espartero after the riots in October 1841, a crackdown on the rebels and their leader General Diego de León, who was actually executed on 15 October 1841. On the other hand, it was in December 1843 after the overthrow of regent Espartero military adviser to Government President Luis González Bravo.

For his services he ( Senador Vitalicio ) was appointed on August 15, 1845 senator for life. On December 16, 1845 was his promotion to Lieutenant General ( Teniente General ). On 10 May 1846 he was elevated as Count ( Conde ) of Alcoy in the non- hereditary peerage.

Later, he was from 1848 to 1850 governor and commander in chief ( Capitán General ) of the Royal Army ( Ejercito Real) in Cuba. During his tenure as governor of the founding of cities such as Unión de Reyes in addition to the promotion of trade and agriculture took place.

Government President

On December 14, 1852, he was appointed as the successor of Juan Bravo Murillo President of the Government of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ). As such, he formed a largely composed of military personnel transition cabinet, in which alone after a cabinet reshuffle with Antonio Benavides y Fernandez Navarrete a civilian as Minister of the Interior ( Ministro de Gobernación ) and Minister for promotions ( Ministro de Fomento ) was represented. Roncali himself took also the Minister of Foreign Affairs ( Ministro de Estado ). Due to an internal military opposition he had to resign on April 14, 1853, and handed over to the President of the Government of Francisco Lersundi Hormaechea.

For his military and political achievements, he has received several awards:

  • Grand Cross (Gran Cruz ) of the Orden de Carlos III ( Order of Charles III. )
  • Knight ( Caballero ) of the Orden de San Fernando ( Order of Saint Ferdinand )
  • Knights of the Real y Militar Orden de San Hermenegildo (Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegildo )

His younger brother Joaquin Roncali y Ceruti was for many years a Member of Parliament ( Congreso de los Deputies ) and also temporarily Minister of Foreign and appeals for clemency and justice.
