Federico Halbherr

Federico Half Men (* February 15, 1857 in Rovereto, at that time Austria-Hungary to a place associated Tyrol; † July 17, 1930 in Rome ) was an Italian classical archaeologist and epigraphists.

Life and work

Half Lord led numerous excavations on Crete. In 1884, he and Ernst Fabricius discovered in Gortyn ( Greek: Gortyn ) the municipal law of Gortyn, inscription panels dating from around 500 BC to 450 BC, which are composed of 42 blocks of stone and comprise a total of 17,000 characters. In 1885 he began excavations in the " Cave of the Shepherd Girl" ( Spiliara tis Voskopoulas ) in the Nidahochebene that were systematically continued after 1983 by the archaeologists Jannis and Efi Sakellarakis. The Inscriptiones Creticae were issued based on the collected materials he Margherita Guarducci.

In 1900, or about the same time as Arthur Evans worked at Knossos, Phaistos started in under half Herr's leadership, the excavations of the Italian Archaeological Mission. Half Lord worked perfectly unlike Evans, therefore, was at Phaistos much less reconstructed than in Knossos. In Agia Triada, where he dug too, is now a bust in his honor.

In the late 19th century, half Lord the ancient Cyrenaica increasingly interested for Libya, because he wanted to pursue their historical relations with Italy. His attempt to establish an Italian excavation in Cyrene, but failed, as in 1909, an American team was given the excavation permit:

1899 Half Men became a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, 1912 socio nazionale. His correspondence with Gaetano De Sanctis, a promoter of his excavation plans, was published in 1986. Since 1903 he was a regular member of the German Archaeological Institute. He was also a member of the Accademia degli Agiati in his home town of Rovereto and honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies.
