Paolo Orsi

Paolo Orsi ( born October 18, 1859 in Rovereto, † November 8, 1935 ibid ) was one of the most important pre-historians and classical archaeologists in Italy.

Paolo Orsi studied ancient history and archeology in Vienna and Padua and received his doctorate in Rome. However, he aspired to no university career, but focused on the work site during excavations. He devoted himself to the prehistoric sites, particularly those of Sicily, and was instrumental in the exploration of Stentinello culture.

From 1895 to 1934 Orsi director of the Archaeological Museum in Syracuse, the honor today bears his name Museo Archeologico Regionale " Paolo Orsi ". In 1909 he co-founded the Società Italiana di Archeological Museum. The Accademia dei Lincei, he was a member since 1896. He was also a member of the Accademia degli Agiati in his hometown. In 1924 he was appointed Senator of the Kingdom.
