The Fehmarn Sound Bridge is a combined road and railway bridge, which connects the island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea to the mainland at Großenbrode. By Opened in 1963 Fehmarnsundbrücke and the same built Ferry Puttgarden on Fehmarn, the average travel time was significantly reduced to the so-called bird's flight from Hamburg to Copenhagen.

The 963 meter long bridge spans the 1,300 -meter-wide Fehmarn, with the remaining 337 meters consist of two-sided ramps. She has a clear height of 23 meters above the mean water and provides vessel traffic passage of 240 meters in width and a vertical clearance of 23 meters above sea level. It is a steel structure with 21 meters wide, of which six meters are used by the Deutsche Bahn. The approximately 268.5 meters long arch has a span of 248 meters and is 45 meters above the road 's highest point.

History

The first plans for a pure railway bridge go back to the year 1912. After the German occupation of Denmark a wider bridge for railway and autobahn was planned and begun in 1941 by the Organisation Todt. The total investment amounted to eight million Reichsmarks. The construction work had to be canceled due to the war in 1942.

The network arch bridge was designed by the engineers G. Fischer, T. Jahnke and P. Stein Gutehoffnungshütte Sterkrade AG, Oberhausen - Sterkrade. In the architectural design of the architect Gerd Lohmer participated. Builders were the Bundesbahndirektion Hamburg and the State Office for Road Schleswig -Holstein.

On the construction of the bridge, which began in January 1960, were next to the Gutehoffnungshütte the company CH Involved Jucho, Felten & Guilleaume and Flender. Supplier of suspenders were the HOAG works, the bearings were manufactured by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen.

The first use of the bridge took place from 16 Januar 1963. Due to the severe winter the ferry had stopped to Fehmarn for several weeks. To ensure the supply of the island and the site of bird flight line during this time, the use of the bridge by special permission and at your own risk was permitted. After more than three years of construction, the bridge on April 30, 1963, was inaugurated.

In the land-side driveway to Fehmarnsundbrücke were during the Cold War as prepared locks six explosive bays in the road, and their location can still be seen today through six square asphalt patches. In Heinrichsruh is about a kilometer from the associated locking means house.

Since 1999 the Fehmarn bridge stands on a proposal from the State Office for Monument Protection in Kiel listed building and has become a landmark of Fehmarn and Schleswig -Holstein.

From June 11 2010 to DB AG led to four nights, extensive measurements and stress tests, including a 1,500 -ton Lokzug through to determine the condition of the bridge and the suitability for future expansion.

The Federal Ministry of Finance paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Fehmarn bridge in 2013 with a special stamp. Inception was April 4, 2013, the brand value is 75 ct. The stamp was designed by Prof. Heribert Birnbach for a photo by Torsten Wolf; it shows the characteristic arch of the main opening against the evening sky.

Planning

The Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Transport Meyer informed Transport Minister Ramsauer on 11 September 2012 that the Land Schleswig- Holstein wanted an additional connection ( bridge or tunnel ) over the Fehmarn for inclusion in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2015 sign.

In December 2012, it was announced that the existing Fehmarnsundbrücke could no longer meet the higher loads after the opening of the fixed link. The results of the static recalculation of DB ProjektBau were presented to the public on 17 January 2013. The existing structure must therefore be at least upgraded; New variants are also considered.
