Feliciano Viera

Alberto Feliciano Viera Borges ( * 1872 in Salto, † 1927 ) was a Uruguayan politician from the Partido Colorado. From 1 March 1915 to 1 March 1919, he was President of the Republic of Uruguay.

Viera served under President José Batlle y Ordóñez as interior minister, whom he was politically very close. So he brought in his tenure reforms in the sense of its predecessor, which had the primary aim to further expand the Uruguayan welfare state.

Important political events of his tenure were the breaking off relations with Germany during the First World War in 1917, the adoption of a new constitution in the same year, which divided the executive power between the president and a national Board, and from 1916, the complete separation of church and state.
