Felix (Bishop of Urgell)

Felix of Urgell († 818 ) was an early medieval theologian and Bishop of Urgell.

Adoptionism debate

Felix followed in Spain by Archbishop of Toledo Elipandus represented adoptianistischen doctrine, according to which Christ is the divine nature by natural son, his human nature, but only adopted son of God. He was forced to 792 at the Synod of Regensburg to cancellation. However, back in his diocese of Urgell, he returned to adoptianistischen teaching. Therefore his teaching at the Synod of Frankfurt was 794 sentenced again.

Alcuin ( Libellus adversus Felicis haeresim, Contra felicem Urgellitanum libri VII, Adversus Elipandum libri IV) and Paulinus of Aquileia (Contra felicem Urgellitanum episcopum libri VII) involved in a series of writings in detail with the refutation of the positions Felix and Elipands. The controversy reached 799 with a disputation between Alcuin and Felix at the Council of Aachen their culmination. Felix was forced to give up his bishopric and from then on remained in captivity in Lyon, where he died in 818. He is regarded as a teacher of Bishop Claudius of Turin.
