Felix Blumenfeld

Felix Mikhailovich Blumenfeld ( Russian Феликс Михайлович Блуменфельд, scientific transliteration: .. Feliks Michajlovič Blumenfeľd; * 7.jul / April 19 1863greg in Kowalówka; † January 21, 1931 in Moscow) was a Russian composer, conductor and pianist.

Life

Blumenfeld studied from 1881 to 1885 at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rimsky -Korsakov composition and piano with Fedor stone. From 1885 to 1918 he worked there as a piano teacher (later Professor ), besides, he was 1895-1911 Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre. Here his teacher Rimsky -Korsakov 's operas were premiered under his direction, and he also directed the Russian premiere of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. 1918 to 1922 he was director of the Conservatory of Kiev, where Vladimir Horowitz was one of his protégés, and 1922-1931 teacher at the Moscow Conservatory.

As a pianist, he has played numerous world premieres of contemporary Russian composers.

Blumenfeld wrote himself a symphony, an Allegro de concert for piano and orchestra, a string quartet, piano pieces and songs. Especially his virtuoso piano works have been rediscovered in recent years.

The piano and song compositions show influences of Frédéric Chopin, Pyotr Tchaikovsky orchestral works are close.

He was the uncle of Heinrich Neuhaus.
