Felix Kubin

Felix Kubin, actually Felix Knoth (* 1969 in Hamburg ) is a German musician, composer and radio playwrights. He runs the record label Gagarin Records.

Life

Felix Kubin began his musical career at the age of eight years of piano and electronic organ. From 1992 to 1996 he studied drawing, sound installation, video and animation film at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg, Department of Design. In 1995 he was for a one-year DAAD Study Abroad in Media Art Department of the School of Art AKI in Enschede, Netherlands.

1981, when twelve years old, he already took his own tracks with synthesizer, organ, voice and drum machine. Two years later, one of the first 4-track cassette recorder came about. In 1983, he joined together with Stefan Mohr under the name " The Egocentric 2 " live on. He was discovered at an early stage of the Hamburg label owner and impresario Alfred MoP ( ZigZag Records), who taught him various appearances, for example, 1985 in Hamburg Markthalle at the Festival "In the Heat of the Night". Some home recording recordings from this period were, inter alia, documented on the compilation "The tetchy Teenage Tapes of Felix Kubin 1981-1985 ".

In the 1990s, Kubin began with music from sounds to experiment and released several albums with his band " sound of war." From 1992 to 1994 he was a member of the dada - communist singing group " Liedertafel Margot Honecker ". Coinciding with the founding of his record label Gagarin Records 1998, he turned back to the avant-garde pop. In the following years he expanded his artistic spectrum through lecture performances and contemporary compositions for chamber orchestra and electronics.

His radio plays emerge as montages in the home studio of elements of classical music, trash, stage and radio art. He draws on various influences. He collects Volksmusikinstumente from the Eastern bloc, cut up old magnetic tapes, archived sound bites from the daily lives and creates from it a " potpourri ".

In addition to numerous recordings publications, workshops and lectures at home and abroad Felix Kubin wrote music for films and theater productions. Moreover played on over 80 international music and media art festivals including Sonar, Mutek, Wien Modern and Ars Electronica.

2010 will be a live concert "Echo House " for six rooms, headphone ensemble and electronics was premiered in collaboration with the "ensemble Intégrales " at the March Music Festival in Berlin.

Music direction

In Felix Kubin's music has influences of the German New Wave ( NDW ), contemporary classical music and film music of the 20th century can be recognized. He frequently uses analog synthesizers. A significant proximity to the German New Wave is also evident in his surrealist German lyrics that are wild, poetic and open to interpretation.

To participate actively in the development of early NDW, Kubin but was too young.

Radio plays

Since 2001, Felix Kubin produced radio programs between radio drama and feature. They can be divided into three categories:

  • Radio plays, which compress documentary footage with studio recordings in a fictional context, and thus go beyond the classic feature. ( Paralektronoia, repeat 1-8, syndicate of anti-noise )
  • Dramatic radio plays ( Orpheus ' Psykotron, Orphée Mécanique )
  • Sound Art ( night storage, Territerrortorium, infant, shower head, ladies steps )

Thus, for example, appears the radio opera Repeat 1-8 as a " manual of the technological world ," convey the instructions on the construction of a cabinet on the use of a telephone receiver up to autosuggestion cassettes an idea of how bad language actually works as a communication tool.

Film and theater music

In the theater Kubin spent the past few years, other artists such as Christoph Schlingensief ( " Atta Atta " Volksbühne Berlin, 2003 ), Mariola Brillowska ( "House of National Dog ," Kamp nail Hamburg, 2007), Schorsch Kamerun ( "Hollywood Elegies ", Ruhr Triennale Essen, 2002) and Branco Simic ( " random ", Kampnagel Hamburg, 2003). He composed film music for animated films by Mariola Brillowska, Anke wet Berger and Martha Colburn. He also wrote screenplays for " propaganda films " the dada - communist art KED party (Communist Party of Germany ), and produced his own short films shown at international festivals and foreign television.
