Fencibles

Fencibles were a British infantry and cavalry militia.

They originated in the 15th century and were called in the case of wars and emergencies in life to make regular troops free for use abroad. Your officers' posts were awarded to deserving officers on half-pay. They were, by the Lord- Lieutenants of Counties. In contrast to the Yeomanry they were allowed to be used outside the counties.

The Fencibles were abolished in 1806.
