Lord Lieutenant

Lord Lieutenant [ lɔ ː d lɛftɛnənt ] is the title of the personal representatives of the British monarch in the administrative units of the United Kingdom. Its main tasks include the formal welcome of a member of the royal family when they visit their area.

Formerly belonged to each of the traditional counties a Lord Lieutenant. In England and Wales, the area that is associated with a Lord Lieutenant, as a ceremonial county ( ceremonial county ) called. In Scotland they are called lieutenancy areas.

In Ireland, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was the head of the British administration until 1922, the Irish Free State was proclaimed, which culminated in the present Republic of Ireland.

Deputy Lieutenant (DL ) is the British term for a subordinate office of Lord Lieutenant
