Feng Menglong

Menglong Feng (Chinese冯梦龙, Pinyin Feng Menglong; * 1574, † 1645) was a Chinese poet of the late Ming dynasty.

Life

Feng (today: Wuxian in Jiangsu Province ) in Changzhou born.

He was considered a supporter of the School of Li Zhi (1527-1602), which emphasized the importance of human emotions and human behavior in the literature. A large part of his literary work was the editing and publication of yearbooks, almanacs, novels and the like.

Work

Feng's main work is in the vernacular ( huaben ) drafted, published 1620-1627 cycle Sanyan (three calls). It consists of the collections of short stories

  • Yushi Mingyan ( Clear words to brighten the world)
  • Jingshi Tongyan ( Radical words of encouragement in the world) and
  • Xingshi Hengyan ( Haunting words for disenchantment of the world).

The stories draw people in a naturalistic manner and act of as -crossed lovers, lecherous monks or greedy pimps. With the official Confucian state doctrine they were difficult to reconcile.
