Fenthion is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of organophosphates, which is used as an insecticide.

History

Fenthion was developed in 1958 by Bayer AG and in 1960 brought to the market.

Properties

Fenthion belongs chemically to the group of Thiophosphoric and is only very slightly flammable, colorless, odorless, brown as a technical product, oily, slightly smelling of garlic, liquid before. In water Fenthion is practically insoluble, but soluble in most organic solvents. Fenthion has a viscosity of 42.4 mPa.s at 20 ° C. It decomposes above a temperature above 135 ° C.

Use

Fenthion is used as an insecticide ( acetylcholinesterase inhibitor) for the control of mosquitoes, fleas and ticks as well as Avizid and acaricide, as in fish farming ( poisoning of disturbing fish or crabs ). It is also effective against certain plants and is very toxic to birds. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland fenthion is not authorized as pesticides.

Fenthion is also known as an intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals of importance.

Safety

It is brought into the U.S. with the decline of many bird populations in conjunction and like all acid esters for humans highly toxic (nerve poison). Fenthion is potentially mutagenic and can be absorbed through the skin. It builds up in the environment only slowly.
