Fernando Pérez

Fernando Pérez Valdés ( born 1944 in Havana ) is a Cuban film director and screenwriter.

Life

Fernando Pérez Valdés is one of Cuba's most important international filmmakers. Born in 1944 in Havana, he ( Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos ) began in 1962 during his studies as a production assistant and translator at the Cuban Film Institute ICAIC to work. Pérez wrote movie reviews, among others for the film journal Cine Cubano, led cinema debates and closed 1970, his linguistic and literary studies at the University of Havana. He then worked as an assistant director and moonlighting as a Russian teacher. Between 1974-1984 Pérez turned over 20 documentaries and newsreels, including Camilo (1982 ) over Camilo Cienfuegos and Omara (1983 ) Omara Portuondo over before he realized in 1987 his first feature film Dangerous Life ( Clandestinos ). Then he turned Hello Hemingway (1990 ) and Madagascar ( 1994).

His next two films, The Life is to Whistle (La vida es silbar ) of 1998 and Suite Habana 2003 as milestones of Cuban cinema, and has received numerous awards, as among others the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the SIGNIS Award at San Sebastián International Film Festival, awarded by the Spanish film Academy Goya Award and the prize of the CICAE ( Confédération Internationale des Cinemas d'Art et d' Essai, International Association of Art Cinemas ) in the forum of the International Film at the Berlinale.

In 2007 he turned Madrigal dedicated René Clair. With José Martí, El Ojo del Canario, a film about the Cuban freedom fighter José Martí, he again succeeded in 2010, international recognition.

In addition to the awards he received for his work as director and screenwriter, was honored for his book " Corresponsales de guerra " Fernando Pérez in 1982 with the Premio Casa de las Américas, in which he battle of young cineastes against the Somoza regime in Nicaragua describes. Fernando Pérez was from 1993 to 1995 Academic Director of the International Academy of Film and Television ( Spanish: Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión, EICTV ) in San Antonio de los Baños. In addition, he taught as a professor of film history at the Universidad de la Habana. In the winter semester 2006/2007 Pérez worked as Samuel Fischer Guest Professor at the Peter Szondi Institute of the Free University of Berlin.

He is married to German film director Claudia von Alemann and lives in Havana.
