Ferocactus

Ferocactus macrodiscus

Ferocactus is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus derives from the Latin adjective " ferus " for wild, untamed and refers to the strong spines of some species.

Description

Ferocacti are flat round, spherical or cylindrical stem succulents. They are usually solitary or branched basally. Strong branching species form large cushion-like groups of several hundred heads. The on the eleven to 30 ( to 60) often gehöckerten ( dissolved in young plants almost warts) ribs standing areoles bear strong spines, which are yellow to bright red, brown and then stained gray with age. The marginal teeth are usually splayed out like rays, the central spines are prominent and larger, straight or hook-shaped, often flattened and curled across.

The flowers appear singly from the Scheitelareolen already large plants. The flower tubes are short, outside densely scaly and thornless. The colors of the bracts ranging from yellow-green to orange and red ( and white striped) to purple. Costs incurred after fertilization fruits turn white when ripe, yellow or orange, open basally, then dry out and release the most black, sometimes brown seeds.
