Festus Mogae

Festus Mogae Gontebanye ( born August 21, 1939 in Serowe ) from 1998 to 2008, President of Botswana. He is a member of the Botswana Democratic Party ( BDP).

Life

Mogae studied economics at the University of Sussex and later at Oxford University and, after completing his studies in the civil service. Later he worked for the International Monetary Fund. From 1980 to 1982 he was Governor of the Bank of Botswana. He was Minister of Finance and Development Planning 1989. From 1992 he held the position of Vice President. On 1 April 1998 he succeeded by Quett Masire as President. In October 2004, he was re-elected. After exactly ten years in office, he joined on 1 April 2008 from his position back. His successor is the former Vice - President Ian Khama.

2008 Mogae was awarded for " successful government work" and for the fight against AIDS in Botswana with the doped with 3.7 million euros Mo Ibrahim Prize.
