Filarete of Calabria

Philaretos the Younger ( * around 1020 in Palermo, † April 8, 1070 in Seminara ), was a Basilian of the 11th century. He is worshiped both in the Orthodox Churches and the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.

Life

Philaretos, baptized in the name of Philip, came from a peasant family of Greek origin. When he was 18 years old, his family fled from the Saracens from Sicily to Calabria. At the age of 25, he became a monk in the monastery Sant'Elia di Enna in Seminara at Palmi, founded in 884 by Elias the Younger ( † August 17 903 in Thessaloniki ). He was in charge there, the supply of cattle and horses, and later he was responsible for growing vegetables.

When invaded by the Normans in 1057 in the area, the monks had to flee. Some sources report that the monastery after the Synod of Melfi ( 1059 ) and the investiture of Robert Guiscard was transferred by Pope Nicholas II in the possession of the Latin Benedictine. These sources go on to state that the Greek monks returned to the Benedictines had to act now. Philaretos lived accordingly, in a little hut in the monastery garden, he used also. He died there in 1070 after a short illness.

Aftereffect

About two years after his death, a blind woman, the Holy Elijah said to have appeared, who promised her healing at the grave of Philaretos, whereupon the latter had recovered by the dust of the grave sight. The convent was henceforth named alongside the founder Elia after Philaretos (Italian Filarete ). The most important historical source for the life Philaretos ' applies a manuscript from 1308 ( Vita a Nilo. Measurement. Gr 29, ff 3 \ 14).

In the following years the grave was forgotten and was rediscovered after an earthquake until February 22, 1693. 1709, some relics of St. Basil were passed in Palermo.

Details of his life differ in the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox tradition. So in the traditions are mentioned as date of death alternatively April 8, 1070 and April 6, 1076. The name Philaretos or Filarete is sometimes translated as " lover of virtue " (from gr Φιλάρετος ), sometimes called " Fischer " (Latin tradition). As a nickname in addition to Calabria and gardener (Italian l' Ortolano ) also Seminara and Palermo familiar. In order to distinguish him from Philaretos, they call him the younger ones.

Vera Falkenhausen 2007 was a year of birth in the 1030ern and dated escape from the Saracens in the year 1041.
