FileNet

FileNet was a 1982 in Costa Mesa (CA ), United States, was established hardware and software manufacturers, whose original goal was the development and sale of optical storage technologies and most recently with its product FileNet P8 held the market leadership in enterprise content management. In Germany FileNet began its operations in the year 1988., The company has expanded over the years several times changed its strategic approach, such as the early 1990s, from the hardware to the software development to meet the changing market environment needs. Technological progress demanded from that date specifically tailored to the software hardware anymore, so FileNet stopped the production hardware and only focused on the development of software in the field of document management. Since its foundation the world have over 4000 companies, including more than three quarters of the Fortune 100, have taken a FileNet -based solution for the management of their enterprise content and processes. In August 2006, FileNet was eventually acquired by IBM as part of its Information on Demand ( IoD ) initiative for $ 1.6 billion.

History

The 1980s

FileNet was founded in 1982 in Costa Mesa ( CA), USA by Ted Smith and Edward Miller to offer paper-intensive businesses such as banks and insurance companies a technology for the storage and use of documents. Even then, many companies are faced with the problem to manage legally compliant copies of documents such as payroll, personnel records and invoices. These documents had to be archived as image files, as for example, signatures would be lost in a purely text-based IT solution. Image files needed at that time but more space than ordinary computers became available, so that many companies either limited archiving on the management of physical copies, or used the microfilm for archiving business-critical documents. However, since this type of storage is associated with no digitization, there was no way to integrate the document into the computer systems of the business. At this point, Smith and Miller recognized the potential of optical storage technologies, which made it possible to increase the productivity paper -intensive firms and those documents electronically exchange ideas. FileNet delivered, among other hardware that was able to manage up to 200 optical storage disks ( JukeBox ). Furthermore, purpose-built for FileNet scanners and printers were sold to bring information from the screen back on paper. The software WorkFlo allowed the operation of the hardware, especially the jukebox and displaying the documents. In the course of time WorkFlo developed by a software to view documents towards a structured tool that regulation the flow of documents allowed in companies. In this context, the term "workflow" developed descriptive of this concept. This term was then rapidly adapted from competing software vendors.

The 1990s

In 1991, FileNet introduced a new version of WorkFlo, which was run on the graphical operating systems from Microsoft. From this point, the software could be run on computers even that was not provided by FileNet, but customers had to continue to buy the scanner specially prepared. This fact became more and more an obstacle, as many competitors offering systems that gave customers the opportunity to continue using their existing hardware or to purchase cheaper from any manufacturer. Therefore, FileNet introduced in 1992 a large part of its hardware manufacturing and focused henceforth on the software development in the area of Enterprise Content Management. Beginning of 1998, FileNet Panagon as a collection of integrated document management and workflow products before. Around 2000, the simple archiving of documents had long since no attractive novelty, so that Panagon even then some internet ready made functionalities (such as FileNet Web Services). The use of FileNet products has now also attractive for other areas, such as e-commerce, where documents are often available only electronically and be signed using electronic signatures.

After the turn of the millennium

By focusing solely on the software creation and again changing market environment, caused by the ever-growing influence of the Internet on this business world, to broaden the range of FileNet was inevitable. In this context, followed by acquisitions of several software as the in-house development was no longer carry alone:

  • In 2002, FileNet Bethesda, a provider of web content management
  • In 2003, FileNet eForms Shana with the aim to add functionality.
  • In 2005, FileNet Yaletown Technology Group to develop the ability to handle multiple content types with Email Manager and Records Crawler.

In 2003, FileNet took its largest to date market publication. The FileNet P8 architecture was initially developed for the U.S. market and consisted of components, document management, Web content management and image management covering the different areas of business process management, records management. Finally FileNet end of 2006 IBM as part of its Information on Demand was taken initiative for $ 1.6 billion ($ 35/Aktie ).

IBM FileNet P8 software

An integrated platform for content, process and compliance

IBM FileNet P8 based on the three pillars essential functional content, process and compliance. These functionalities should companies allow easy delivery of content, faster decision-making and compliance with the legal framework.

Content

The information necessary for decision making, are in different forms throughout the company before scattered. In addition to customer, financial and product data can include, for example, scanned images, web pages, video files, e- mails, documents and all acts and operations. These are managed in different locations, in different business units or even within different time zones.

Process

Business process management, so the mapping, development and improvement of business processes is all the more interesting, the more complex an organization is structured. Traditional users of business process management solutions are particularly large banking and insurance houses, because there are many information-centric and repetitive sequences.

Compliance

A variety of industry- specific rules in terms of corporate governance and requirements for compliance with corporate policies and legal requirements for the archiving of business-related documents is for many companies a challenge To meet these requirements, they require a compliance platform with which they bear the cost for the can reduce compliance with corporate policies, reduce risk and improve responsiveness to legal and administrative requirements. This is about content or information lifecycle management ( ILM), based on business needs - based - and not primarily memory requirements.

Active Content

Content, documents are based on the new paradigm no longer only passive content objects, but event- sensitive, active content that can trigger on its own actions or processes. Through content of different sources and their status changes processes are initiated and carried out, replaced, and linked information with other applications. Thus, customers, employees and partners can be obtained with minimal effort in the shortest possible time orders, deliver goods, approve applications and more. Active Content describes the intelligent combination of business-critical content with events that trigger business processes - across application and enterprise boundaries.
