Finlay Currie

Finlay Jefferson Currie ( born January 20, 1878 in Edinburgh, Scotland, † May 9, 1968 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England) was a Scottish theater and film actor.

Life

Born in Scotland Currie began his work as organist and choir director, before he got around 1898 first stage engagements. Almost 10 years he tournierte as a member of Benjamin Fuller's theater group by Australia, and was then in London on stage.

His first film role was Currie in 1931, at the age of 53 years. Although he was later seen in over 120 films, he has been known, in contrast to most other actors only with age. He got good reviews for the performances in Great Expectations. Curries trademark was the deep voice, with which he frequently played respectable and admirable personalities. His most famous film was the 1959 epic film produced Ben Hur, in the Currie embodied the old King Balthasar. Just eight years earlier, in 1951, he had in Quo vadis? presented with Simon Peter another biblical character. In any case, Currie was often used due to its distinctive face in monumental and historical films. He rarely embodied evil movie characters.

Finlay Currie died the age of 90 of natural causes. He acted among others in passing successfully with antiques. He also collected works of Robert Burns. He was married to Maude Courtney with whom he had a son named George (* 1906) had.
