Finley Peter Dunne

Dunne became famous through the figure of the Irish innkeeper Mr. Martin Dooley, the humorous and sharply criticized contemporary events in Irish dialect. The stories published since 1890, first as column in the Chicago Evening Post, but soon gained national attention. By the end of the First World War about 700 episodes published. Many of them were also published in book form.

Dunne was from 1902 married to Margaret Abbott, the first American Olympic champion. Among her four children was the screenwriter and director Philip Dunne.
