Origin and History

The origin of the Finnish Lapphunds has can not be solved exactly. A similar arctic stehohriger dog has probably already lived 7000 BC in the polar regions. After the Ice Age to the 17th and 18th century, the inhabitants of these territories have been working as a hunter. In the 17th and 18th centuries they have gradually begun to herd cattle. First, the dog was used as a hunting dog and guard dog, and later as an aid to reindeer herding. The Lapphund was not uniform in appearance, but different stocks were located in different areas of Lapland.

The first race of the Finnish definition Lapphunds dates from the year 1945, where the name of the breed was still Lappi shear Shepherd. The dogs were larger than today's race, resembling the Belgian shepherd dog. In the 1960s, the Lappish reindeer dog and the Lapphund were separated into separate races. At today's Finnish Lapphund is still clearly the influence of the dogs from the Finnish Kennel Peski from the 1970s to feel. The official name of the breed is a Finnish Lapphund since 1993. The standard was last renewed in 1996.

Description

Appearance

The Finnish Lapphund is medium built big and strong, longer than the height at the withers.
