Finnish presidential election, 1988

The presidential election in Finland in 1988 took place on 31 January and 1 February 1988.

The elections were conducted in a new system. In addition to the Electoral College, the Finnish population was called to elect the president directly. The Electoral College would only be used, none of the candidates should reach an absolute majority in the direct line. To prevent a stalemate of the Electoral College from 300 to 301 persons has been extended.

In fact, received incumbent Mauno Koivisto, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Finland, which was also supported by other parties and lists, in the direct election 48.9 % of the votes which a meeting of the electoral committee was necessary. This eventually chose him in the second round again to the president.

Candidates

Five candidates took up the presidential election:

Mauno Koivisto:

Again for the Social Democratic Party of Finland went to incumbent Mauno Koivisto. The 64 -year-old held the office of Finnish President since 1982. Previously, he had been Finnish Prime Minister from 1968 to 1970 and from 1979 until 1982. In addition to his own party, he was also supported by the Country Party of Finland and erected especially for the choice list per Koivisto. In addition, he also received the vocal commitment as part of the Åland Samling.

Paavo Väyrynen:

The 41 -year-old Paavo Väyrynen went to the Finnish Centre Party. Väyrynen had worked since 1975, already in several cabinets as ministers, including as Secretary of State under the Social Kalevi Sorsa and Mauno Koivisto. From the Centre Party, he had already been determined in 1986 as a candidate. During the campaign, he sat mainly on foreign policy and threw Koivisto in this field incompetence. However, the situation changed by the onset of relaxation with the inauguration of Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union, which Väyrynen lost its main theme. He also had difficulty in finding well as personality wider recognition in the Finnish population surveys.

Harri Holkeri:

The liberal-conservative National Coalition Party presented Harri Holkeri on as their candidate. Holkeri became Prime Minister in 1987 after the parliamentary elections.

Kalevi Kivistö:

The Left Socialist Democratic Union of the Finnish people had received a severe setback in the parliamentary elections of 1987. In the presidential elections she asked now specifically the movement 88 which should support their candidate Kalevi Kivistö. Kivistö was begun in 1982 for the SKDL and could this time keep his voting result at about 11%. At the time of Wahö he was acting Minister of Education.

Jouko Kajanoja:

The 46 -year-old Jouko Kajanoja was the candidate of the Democratic alternative. The Democratic alternative had emerged in 1986 from within the party, orthodox Marxist opposition of the Democratic Union of the Finnish people and had received in the parliamentary elections in 1987 4.2% of the tuners. Under Koivisto he was 1981/82 Minister of Labour.

The 301 members of the Electoral Committee met on 15 February 1988. Mauno Koivisto was elected on the second ballot for president, so he could begin his second term.
