Flagellation of Christ

The whipping post, and Calvary, Calvary is one of the tools suffering of the Passion of Christ.

General

The whipping post was in the 10th century entrance to the Christian iconography. Jesus is shown tied up in the night before the crucifixion and tied to the whipping post, often beaten by soldiers with whips and rods, so that it appears in the morning in a weakened state before Pilate. Passion pillars erected in the late 15th century and unite thematically Passion symbols associated with the suffering of Christ. Shown are the sufferings tools ( arma Christi, weapons of Christ ') and human figures (eg the soldiers who captured Jesus ). In the column a rooster is often portrayed, which is to remind you of the denial of Christ by Peter.

Such a column is not mentioned in the Biblical Gospels, but it goes back to the Christian tradition. Thus we find in 1300 following consideration of the Passion of Christ:

Under the name " Christ at the Column " ("Christ at the Column " ) was the subject a broad absorption in the medieval painting.
