Flatiron (ship)

The Flatiron Collier is a coastal and inland type.

Particulars

Flatirons ( iron), often also called " Flatties " Colliers are particularly flat design. The main application of the Flatties was the transportation of coal from North East England and South Wales to power and gas plants in Battersea, Fulham, Nine Elms, Wandsworth etc on the Thames. To this end, they pointed out very flat structures, collapsible masts and chimneys on what allowed them passage and low bridges.

Flatiron Colliers have been built since the late 19th century. In the 1960s and 1970s, coal consumption decreased in the Thames region, the number of Flatties therefore was used less and less.
