Flood barrier

A storm surge barrier or storm surge barrier is to prevent a weir in the form of movable gates that shut off a Tidefluss, a bay or a channel in the case of a storm surge and thus increased water levels and flooding inland. Storm surge weirs are pure protection structures for particularly high tides and therefore open normally. The construction of these dams reduced the dike line, thereby creating additional construction and maintenance measures omitted. Should be possible with closed gates shipping, in addition to a barrage sluices arranged.

In Germany are appropriate barrages on the tidal tributaries of the Elbe (eg Abbenflethsperrwerk, Ilmenau barrage, Lühesperrwerk, Ruth current barrage, rocker barrage, Störsperrwerk ), Ems ( Ems barrier, Ledasperrwerk ) and Weser ( Hunte barrage, Lesum barrage, Ochtumsperrwerk ) and at the mouth of the Eider attached. Large storm surge weirs in other countries such as the Maeslant storm surge barrier in the Netherlands and the Thames Barrier in England.
