Florens-Louis Heidsieck

Florence - Louis Heidsieck ( born November 23, 1749 Borgholzhausen in Gütersloh, † October 17, 1828 in Reims ) was the founder of all subsequent Champagne houses with that name.

Heidsieck was the son of a Protestant pastor Friedrich Heinrich Heidsieck and his wife Dorothee Elisabeth Thorbecke, both from Brockhagen born. Originally his family came from Schleswig -Holstein. At the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship in Lübeck, but settled in 1777 at age 28 in Reims ( France) down there and took French citizenship. From then on he was called Florens -Louis Heidsieck. Shortly afterwards he married the daughter of wealthy textile magnate Nicolas Perthois and founded in 1785 with his son, a company that was first engaged in the trade of textiles.

Already in 1780 he had begun to produce its own wine and it was so successful that he opened up a private champagne house on July 16, 1785. When he dedicated one of his champagne then Queen Marie Antoinette, he was allowed to present this champagne the Queen personally. 1794 the company name was changed to Heidsieck & Co.. Since his young son died unexpectedly early, he got little by his still living in Germany three nephews in his company.

As the first in 1795, Henri -Louis forest tree went into the company. He was succeeded in 1805 Charles -Henri Heidsieck and 1808 Christian Heidsieck, the younger brother of Charles -Henri. One of his nephew, Christian Heidsieck, he made a partaker. As Florens -Louis Heidsieck 1828 died at 79 years, Christian Heidsieck champagne took over the house and made his cousin, Henri Guillaume Piper, a partaker.

From these early days the roots of the champagne houses date, as the nephew and great-nephew went their separate ways. Already in 1834 founded Henry -Louis Walbaum a private champagne company under the name Walbaum & Heidsieck and distributes the monopolies, supplemented later the company name. The other two branches of companies formed under the name of Charles Heidsieck and Piper -Heidsieck. Heidsieck Monopole 1985 is completely taken over by G._H._Mumm. The many legal disputes are buried today, as the champagne houses are now affiliated to other large corporations.

  • Charles Heidsieck - today is Rémy Cointreau
  • Piper -Heidsieck - today is Rémy Cointreau
  • Heidsieck Co.Monopole - part of the Vranken Group since 1998
