Floristry

Floristry is the craftsmanship and artistic design of flowers and plant ornaments. The name is derived from the Latin name of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and youth.

Importance

The Blumenbinderei, now referred to as " florists " is closely connected with centuries-old traditions. So it is in European culture common to decorate graves and mourning halls with wreaths and floral arrangement. Flowers are especially given away for a birthday, baptism, communion and marriage and the locations of the festivities decorated floral.

Also for representative events, for example in business premises and hotels, at conventions and trade shows as well as in living rooms the floral design with flowers and arrangements is common; traditional container to " floral art objects " are used here.

Training

Florist / florist is in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, a recognized three-year apprenticeship, which is formed by the dual training system in florists at the same time vocational school. At master schools or colleges for florists of trained florist can get training to master. Often its own flow of floristry is emerging in such training facilities. The most important German training centers are located in Straubing (Bavaria), Dresden, Gelsenkirchen, Green Mountain, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Hannover- Ahlem and Weihenstephan.

For floristic training includes in particular the areas of cut flowers arrangements ( bouquet arrangement ), wreaths, table decoration or funeral flowers, but also proportions and color theory, stylistics, business calculation and strategies of the sales promotion. Basic knowledge of botany and plant protection are also taught.

Market situation

Florists with their own retail stores ( flower shop ) are under increasing competitive pressure, since increasingly offer supermarkets, street vendors and franchise companies cut flowers. Among the strategies that the professional group wants to ensure their traditional market segment, include the expert advice, durability guarantees a tighter calculation for cut flowers, which are offered as single flowers or the so-called bunches. Also a higher offer from finished tied bouquets is well accepted by the customers.

Name history

Today's job title " Florist " was officially introduced in Germany in 1967 and has gained acceptance in the general public. The previously existing meaning was used by Linnaeus in 1725 for his contemporaries, who wrote the floras and employed as floristae with the spatial detection of plants. As a consequence, also named famous botanist florists. This term is used in botanical experts as before.

In addition to this about 1965 single meaning today call them " florist " and " florist " florists. So the dictionary knows of 1967, the name only as " explorers of Flora". From the 17th edition in 1973 is also " florist " specified.
