Flottbek

The mouth Teufelsbrück at low tide

The Flottbeck is a southward -flowing waters in small Hamburg- Osdorf, Hamburg- Groß Flottbek and Hamburg- Othmarschen. From the river their type is a gravel dominated lowland stream (type 16).

Origin of the name

The name " Flottbeck " (originally " Flottbeck " written earlier probably " Vlothbeke ") is a Low German name. " Flott " on the one hand: " quick, quick" mean, but also to " flood " refer, as the underflow is related to the high tide level of the river Elbe in conjunction, making the surrounding meadows are inundated by storm surge. The meaning of the name would therefore be " fast-flowing " or " overflowing " Bach.

The Flottbeck was eponymous for the surrounding villages: the district Klein Flottbek and the present district of Groß Flottbek.

Course

The Flottbeck rises at the polo field ( Lage53.56065379.85641 ) of the Hamburger Polo Club, and flows piped under the Botanical Garden through to the street "An der Flottbeck ". Here the Flottbeck is visible at about 10 m in length. Then it flows to the golf course of Großflottbeker THGC, to which it forms a natural water hazard, again underground. In the area of parks Jenischhaus it feeds two small ponds and serves as an overflow for the Hamburg storm water drains. A second arm arose earlier south of Bahrenfelder lake. Inflows were the Teufelsbek / Teufelsau and Röbbek that are piped today. The Flottbektal runs largely parallel to the northern approach path for the Airbus aircraft shipyard in Hamburg- Finkenwerder.

The Flottbeck forms in its course a depression in the terrain north of the Elbe past Geesthöhenzug, the nature reserve Flottbektal, and flows Teufelsbrück into the Elbe.
