Furthermore, noise of the original sound are amplified by the foley artist to highlight their importance for the movie plot. The English term is derived from the Foley Sound Editor Jack Foley of Universal Studios.

Operation

The main tasks of the Foley artist heard the recording of steps. In addition to further movement noises include " action sounds" to the repertoire of the Foley artist, including " wash dishes " or " press keys" " pour liquids ". These sounds are usually not included in the original, so as not to interfere with the dialogue. The recordings are stored on a special audio track. During this earlier perforated 35 mm magnetic tape was used, the recording is now common on hard drives and digital audio tape.

The production step of resynchronization of noise attributable to the post-production and can be subdivided further. After it is checked in O-Ton - section of the original sound on his technical and artistic recoverability and is optionally carried out an initial synchronization, environmental noise in the Atmovertonung like thunder, rain, storm, but also dramatic atmospheres such as " silence ", " oppression ", " exuberance " is added or clarified. In effect setting, for example, created the sounds for chases, telephones, alarm clock or rail.

The foley artist is working closely with a mixer, which provides the spatial embedding of the recording. Another field of activity for the foley artist is the radio play or the radio. It does not depend on the synchronicity, but the level of detail of a recording.

The Foley Studio

A Foley studio normally consists of a large room or at least two separate areas, one of which is used as a receiving space and the other as a Foley - stage, where the noise effects are produced. The separation of Foley stage and recording space is recommended, as some Foley effects, such as the bursting of water melons, may be very far-reaching consequences for the environment. However, for communication between Foley artist and sound engineer, it is better to use one instead of two rooms.
