Fontaine, Isère

Fontaine is a commune in the Rhône -Alpes Isère. The city is the administrative center of the cantons Fontaine- Sassenage and Fontaine- Seyssinet in the district of Grenoble.

Geography

The town with 22,175 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) is opposite of Grenoble on the left bank of the Drac on Vercors.

History

The area was already inhabited in the Magdalenian period ( 15000-13000 BC) by the Homo sapiens. Traces of the Neolithic, the Bronze and Iron Age can also be found. 1827 the first bridge was built. From the end of the 19th century Fontaine became a banlieue of the city of Grenoble.

In the Middle Ages, the feudal lords of the Sassenage spread out in the valleys of the Isère and the Drac. The rural population was against them committed to taxes.
