Formakin House

Formakin House is a manor house near the Scottish village of Bishopton in Renfrewshire unitary authority. In 1971 the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A.

History

John A. Holms acquired the lands of Millbank Farm in 1902 and commissioned his friend Robert Lorimer with the planning of a house with surrounding park for storage and display his art collection. With the creation of the park was begun in the following year. This also various outbuildings were built, or remodeled existing buildings. In 1913, Holms interrupted for financial reasons, work on Formakin House, of which up to this time only the outer walls were completed. Although he still had in 1920 to install a central heating, he used the unfinished house at any time. After Holms death in 1938 the family Pickard acquired the property and it remained in their possession until finally in 1984 was bought by the authorities of Renfrewshire.

Description

Formakin House is located along with several outbuildings isolated on a spacious lot. Although the building was only in the 1910s, is designed in the traditional style of a tower house dating from the 16th or early 17th century. This is underlined by false annual stones, which specify the year 1647 with the suffix " DL " as the year of construction. DL stands for Damned Lie ( " damned lie ").

The two-story building has a lower office wing. The roofs are covered with slate and worked as the gable gable.
