Bishopton (Renfrewshire)

Bishopton (Gaelic: Baile an Easbaig ) is a village in the Scottish unitary authority Renfrewshire. The village is situated in the north of Renfrewshire, approximately at 17 km north-west of Glasgow and east of Greenock near the Clyde. The nearest town is two kilometers away Erskine. To the west lies the Grade II listed manor house Formakin House.

History

Since 1332 included the lands of present-day Bishopton the Brisbane family. After 1671 they changed owners several times. Bishopton developed only slowly and recorded 341 inhabitants in 1861. 1937 a Bishopton Royal Ordnance Factory site for munitions production. At the same location were already during the First World War, 10,000 workers engaged in this. Until 1961, the population had risen to 1586. 1991 already lived 5394 people in Bishopton. Recently, the population declined slightly, so as part of the Census 2001, only 5157 people were counted.

Traffic

By M8 Bishopton is directly connected to the road network. The A8 carries on her leg between Glasgow and Greenock directly through the city center. Early as the 19th century closed the Caledonian Railway at Bishopton on the railway network. The station was operated by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway. Today the station is on the Inverclyde Line First ScotRail. The Glasgow International Airport is located five kilometers south-east. Until 1966, the south of Renfrew Renfrew Airport was located in operation.
