Erskine

Erskine (Gaelic: Arascain ) is a town in the Scottish unitary authority Renfrewshire. The village is situated in the north of Renfrewshire about 15 km north- west of Glasgow respectively and 19 km to the east of Greenock near the Clyde. The nearest town is two kilometers away Bishopton. To the northwest lies the Grade II listed manor house in Mar Hall, which now houses a hotel.

History

In the 13th century, Henry de Erskine Lord of the lands of Erskine. Before they went to Blantyre family in 1703, they were in possession of John Hamilton of Orbiston. In the 19th century, Erskine was a small village with 973 inhabitants in 1831. By 1881 it had grown to 1653 residents. During the First World War was Erskine House, the former residence of the last Lord Blantyre, used as a hospital. By 1951 the population had dropped to 618. Erskine was, however, taken as a village in the housing program and was one of the first planned communities in Scotland after the end of World War II. Since then, Erskine recorded steadily increasing population figures from last 15,347 in 2001.

Traffic

Erskine is located at the southern end of the Erskine Bridge, the only crossing of the Clyde west of Glasgow, which connects the A82 on the north shore over the short shuttle M898 motorway with the M8 just south of Erskine. Furthermore, the coming of Paisley A726 runs directly north of the city. Also in the past did not have Erskine its own train station. The nearest is located in the neighboring Bishopton. It was established in the 19th century by the Caledonian Railway and operated by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway. Today the station is on the Inverclyde Line First ScotRail. The Glasgow International Airport is located four kilometers to the southeast. Until 1966, the south of Renfrew Renfrew Airport was located in operation.
