Fort Atkinson is a town in Winneshiek County in the U.S. state of Iowa. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 389 over an area of 0.8 km ². The population density is 485 per km ².

History

Fort Atkinson was built from May 1840 to the summer of 1842 to the Indian tribe of the Ho-Chunk (also called Winnebago ) to protect as part of their eviction from Wisconsin. The United States Army handed the fort on a volunteer army of Iowa, when the troops were needed for the ( 1846-1848 took place ) Mexican -American War. The Ho-Chunk were later removed from Iowa. After Fort Atkinson had lost its meaning, it was abandoned as a military post on February 14, 1849.

Demography

At the census in 2000 389 inhabitants were registered, which were distributed to 165 households and 102 families. Among the 165 households 26.1 percent had children under the age of 18. The average household size was 2.36 persons and the average family size is 3.05. The population was spread out with 26.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.2 percent from 18 to 24, 23.7 percent 25-44 years, 21.6 percent from 45 to 64 years and 20.6 percent at age of 65 years or more. The average per capita income was 14,702 dollars. 12.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
