Fort Dayton

Fort Dayton is located on the north side of the Mohawk River on the West Canada Creek, in what is now Herkimer. It was built in the fall of 1776 during the American Revolutionary War under the supervision of Colonel Elias Dayton on command of General Philip Schuyler.

On August 4, 1777 General Nicholas Herkimer assembled more than 900 men of the Tryon County militia at Fort Dayton to march in support of Colonel Peter Gansevoort to Fort Stanwix, which during the Saratoga campaign by British troops under Barry St. Leger was besieged. Herkimer's troops, which consisted mostly of Palatine German settlers who followed the north bank of the Mohawk and camped the first night west of Sterling ( Staring ) Creek. On August 6, Herkimer's force was lured into a narrow gorge through St. Leger united armed force of British loyalists and Indians in an ambush. In the held here Battle of Oriskany, which ended in a crushing defeat for the settlers armed forces, General Herkimer was severely wounded, led his men, however, continued by giving his wounded camp instructions. Fort Dayton was also a military supply base for Christian Schell after its use in Schell's Bush, and the persecution of the Loyalists leader Walter Butler and his troops. After 1781 Fort Stanwix had been destroyed in the year, Fort Dayton was the westernmost fort in the Mohawk Valley. 1782 was besieged by the Mohawk chief Joseph Brant under her. In July 1783, General George Washington visited Fort Dayton, when he visited the Mohawk Valley during an inspection tour.

A memorial stone for the location of Fort Dayton is the " Historic Four Corners " intersection in the North Main Street in Herkimer.
