Fort-Shevchenko

Fort Shevchenko ( Kazakh and Russian Форт - Шевченко ) is a port city on the Caspian Sea in the area Mangghystau, Kazakhstan, with around 6000 inhabitants ( 2008).

It is located at the westernmost tip of Mangyshlak Peninsula, Cape Tjub Karagan.

History

The city was founded on 1846 as a military fort Nowopetrowskoje ( Новопетровское ). In 1857 it was renamed Fort Aleksandrowskij ( Форт - Александровский ). From 1850 to 1857 Taras Shevchenko ( Shevchenko ) was held in the fortress, which was built in 1939 renamed after him in Fort Shevchenko. 1899 was the fortress with the surrounding settlement was granted town rights.

Economy

The economy is dominated by fishing.
