Fort Washakie

Fort Washakie was a U.S. Army fort in what is now the U.S. state of Wyoming. The fort was first established in 1869 as Camp Augur, named after General Christopher C. Augur, commander of the Department of the Platte. 1870, the camp was renamed in honor of Frederick H. Brown at Camp Brown, who in 1866 was killed in the Fetterman Massacre. 1878 was given the name of Chief Washakie of the tribe of Shoshone and was the only U.S. military outpost, named after a Native American. The fort remained in 1909 military outpost until its closure and was then transferred to the Shoshone Indian Agency. On the floor of the fort are the tombs of Washakie and Sacajawea who provided valuable assistance to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The facility is located within the Wind River Indian Reservation today.
