The Samson Fountain (Ukrainian Фонтан Самсон ) is one of the oldest fountains and an architectural monument in Ukraine's capital Kiev.

Location

The fountain is located on the northern part of the Kontraktowa Square, in the historic area of ​​Podil before Hostynyj Dwir.

History

In the square of the baroque fountain was built with a gazebo in the years 1748-49. In the middle of the fountain, the wooden sculpture of an angel standing with a bowl from which the water flowed, and another angel decorated the roof of the pavilion.

In 1808, the half-rotten angel sculpture by the wooden Samson, the lion 's mouth tears sculpture in the style of the so -called " bourgeois classicism " was replaced. Due to the large fire in Podil 1811 the pavilion was damaged, but restored again. In 1934, the entire fountain was demolished. In the years 1981-1982 was re-established in the course of preparation for the celebration of the 1500th anniversary of the city foundation Kiev fountain and gazebo in the style of Ukrainian Baroque, the sculpture was named after the original figure, which is in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, modeled.
