Fra Diamante

Fra Diamante (actually Diamante di Feo, * 1430 in Terra Nuova, † 1498 ) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance.

Life

Fra Diamante was born about 1430 in Terra Nuova in the Val d'Arno. Even in his early childhood, he came to the monastery of the Carmelites in Prato. The art of painting, he learned by Filippo Lippi. For the first time worked Diamante 1447 for Lippi ( altarpiece Coronation of the Virgin, now in the Uffizi ), from 1452 to the death Lippi in 1469 it was a permanent cooperation. Filippo Lippi After the death of Fra Diamante completed works Lippi, including the frescoes in the apse of the cathedral of Spoleto. He also took care of his ten year old son Filippino Lippi, who learned the art from him and should be a famous painter later.

After Fra Diamante had finished the work on the frescoes of Spoleto, he returned to Prato. 1472 he was living then in Florence where he was enrolled at the Compagnia di San Luca, an artists' guild. 1481 and 1482 he painted the Sistine Chapel. The last record of Fra Diamante comes from a letter written in 1498.
