Francesco del Cossa

Francesco del Cossa (* 1435 in Ferrara, † 1477 in Bologna ) was an Italian Renaissance painter of Ferraneser school.

Life and work

Francesco del Cossa was mainly active in Ferrara, where he (around 1430-1495 ) and Ercole de ' Roberti was one of the main representatives of the Ferraneser school with Cosimo Tura (c. 1450-1496 ). He participated with Roberti in the painting of the salone dei mesi at Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara. From there the frescoes of the month pictures the fields in March, April and May are best preserved. These fields are attributed to Francesco del Cossa.

At the beginning of the 1470s he moved after he did not find the desired attention in Ferrara to Bologna, where he painted an altarpiece for the chapel Griffoni in the church of San Petronio ( 1473 ). The main panel is now in the collection of the National Gallery in London.
