Francesco Gonzaga (1444–1483)

Francesco Gonzaga (c. 1444 in Mantua; † 21 or October 22, 1483 in Porretta ) was the son of the Duke Ludovico III. Gonzaga of Mantua and Cardinal since 1461.

His mother was Barbara of Brandenburg- Kulmbach (* 1423, † November 7, 1481 ), a daughter of Margrave John of Brandenburg.

Francesco studied in Padua and Pisa. His son Francesco ( † 1507) was called " il CARDINALINO ".

Pope Pius II elevated him in the consistory of December 18, 1461 cardinal. On August 12, 1464 he was bishop of Brixen ( Bressanone ), and on August 20, 1466 Bishop of Mantua.
