Francis Knollys (the elder)

Sir Francis Knollys (* 1514 in Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire, † July 19, 1596 ibid ) was an English minister under Elizabeth I ( Tudor ).

Life

He comes from a family that had already served the first Tudors, and began his career at the court of Henry VIII but high offices he held until the reign of Elizabeth I, whose cousin by marriage he was. The Queen commissioned him in 1568 the volatile Mary Stuart to take. Knollys was appointed to the Privy Council and managed the finances of the royal household. As Puritans he faced sometimes the royal policy critical, but he remained until his death a close friend of Elizabeth.

In 1540 he married Catherine Carey, daughter of Mary Boleyn. This was sister of Queen Anne Boleyn.
