Francis Palgrave

Sir Francis Palgrave (* July 1788 in London as Francis Ephraim Cohen, † July 6, 1861 ) was a British historian.

At his marriage in 1823 he converted from Judaism to Christianity and took the name of his mother, Palgrave, at. Since 1827 he was appointed several years to advocate in the House of Lords. He worked particularly on English and Norman history. In 1832 he was knighted knighted. Since 1836 employed at the state archives, he became its director in 1838 and remained until his death in this position. He wrote a number of historical works and contributed articles to various magazines in English.

Palgrave and his wife were born four sons:

  • Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), literary critic, poet and longtime Oxford Professor of Poetry
  • William Gifford Palgrave (1826-1888), Orient traveler and diplomat
  • Inglis Palgrave (1827-1919), economist
  • Reginald Palgrave (1829-1904), lawyer and politician
