Francis Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Trowbridge

Francis Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Trowbridge ( 1590; † July 12, 1664 ) was an English politician.

Francis Seymour was the son of Edward Seymour, Viscount Beauchamp, (1561-1612) and Honora Rogers, daughter of Sir Richard Rogers and Cecilia Luttrell. He was the younger brother of William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset.

Francis Seymour was in 1620 in the House of Commons elected for Wiltshire and was actively involved in the opposition to the reign of Charles I.. He represented the same constituency in the Short and in the Long Parliament. He refused in 1639 to pay the ship money ( a tax). But when his party took increasingly extreme measures, he denied her the support and was charged for it on February 19, 1641 as Baron Seymour of Trowbridge to the peer.

In the Upper House, he voted against the condemnation of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford. He joined the following year (1642 ) at York King Charles and fought during the Civil War on the side of the royalists.

With his first wife, Frances Prinne, whom he had married in 1620, he became the father of two children:

  • Charles (1621-1665), 2nd Baron Seymour of Trowbridge and father of Francis, 5th Duke of Somerset and Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset
  • Frances († 1679 ), married William Ducie, 1st Viscount Downe

1660, he was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, in 1664 he died.
