Franciscan Abbey, Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The Franciscan Rothenburg o.d. Tauber is a former monastery of the Franciscans in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria ( Diocese of Bamberg). The former monastery church is Lutheran parish church today.

History

The consecrated to the Virgin Mary monastery was founded in 1281 by Hermann von Hornburg, mayor, among others. It died out in 1548 in the wake of the Reformation. In the buildings of voluntarily abandoned monastery was only a Latin school, and later housed an apartment for pastor widows. The buildings served among other things as salt Magazine after 1805. Parts of the plant ( cloister, refectory, etc.) have been demolished, destroyed much of the inventory or sold (such as the so-called " Wiblinger altar " by Tilman Riemenschneider ). Nevertheless, the church is still an important example of a mendicant with rood screen and important art treasures.
