Francisco Giner de los Ríos

Francisco Giner de los Ríos ( born October 10, 1839 in Ronda, † February 17, 1915 in Madrid) was a Spanish philosopher and educator.

As a student of Julián Sanz del Río and representatives of Krausismo Giner de los Ríos founded after the policy-induced loss of his Madrid Chair in Philosophy of Law 1876 " Institución Libre de Enseñanza " ( Free educational institution ).

On the basis of his conception of personality as a totality of intellect and emotion, he sought a renewal of education. Therefore, he took arts subjects and crafts lessons into the curriculum and withdrew his ( private ) school of religious and conservative state control. From this educational institution emerged among other Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset and Antonio Machado.

The critique of the positive law, based on a rationalist natural law, he is considered the forerunner of the Sociology of Law. Especially in regard to young people Giner de los Ríos became a for penal reform. He has liberal thought in Spain deeply marked.
