Francisco Manoel de Nascimento

Francisco Manuel do Nascimento (pseudonym: Filinto Elísio, born December 21, 1734 Lisbon, † February 25, 1819 in Paris) was a Portuguese poet, monk and translator.

He was born in Lisbon in 1754 and was ordained to the clergy. Because of its liberal attitude he had to emigrate in 1778 to Paris, where he died in 1819.

Do Nascimento was a friend of the French writer Lamartine. His first poems were published in 1817-1819 in Paris.

His oeuvre was first published in 1836-1840 in Portugal.

Odes and satires were the main genres in his poetry. He also distinguished himself as a translator of Wieland, La Fontaine and Chateaubriand. Overall, he is considered a pioneer of education in Portugal.

He was the last and most important representative of the Arcadian formalism in Portugal.
