Francisco Manuel da Silva

Francisco Manuel da Silva ( born February 21, 1795 in Rio de Janeiro, † December 18, 1865 ibid ) was a Brazilian composer.

Da Silva was a student of José Maurício Nunes Garcia, Sigismund von Neukomm and Marcos António da Fonseca. In 1809 he was lead singer of Capela Real. He founded the Academia de Música e Imperial Ópera Nacional and 1833, the Sociedade de beneficencia musical. In 1834 he became conductor of the orchestra of the Sociedade Fluminense, 1837 Professor of the Music Department of the Colégio de Belas Artes, emerged from the 1841, the Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro. In 1841 he was appointed Imperial Court Composer. Da Silva was regarded as important figure in musical life in Rio de Janeiro in the period between the death of Padre José Maurício and the occurrence of Antônio Carlos Gomes.

He composed an opera, several orchestral works and church music (masses, motets ).
